Dishwasher Components
The purpose of the float or overfill switch is to prevent water from overfilling the dishwasher and flooding the kitchen. If a malfunction keeps the dishwasher from draining, if the timer sticks in the Fill position, or if the float switch fails to open and shut off current to the water-intake valve, water can overflow the dishwasher. Conversely, a float switch that gets stuck in the open position (impeding current to the valve) will prevent the dishwasher from filling with water at all
Crusty, dried-out detergent may be causing the lid to stick. Before taking apart a detergent dispenser because its lid doesn't open automatically, try using vinegar to dissolve the crust.
1. Pour undiluted white vinegar into the dispenser cup with the sticking lid. Do not add detergent.
2. Close the lid and latch the door. Turn on the dishwasher, and let it run through a complete cycle.
3. Open the door. Put soiled dishes into the dishwasher, add detergent to the cup or cups, and run the machine through a complete cycle to determine whether the vinegar has resolved the problem. If it hasn't, you will have to overhaul the dispenser.
REPAIRING A LEAK FROM THE AIR-GAP SYSTEM PROBLEM: A stream of water runs from under the dishwasher after each drain cycle. Some building codes require that under-the-counter dishwashers be equipped with an air-gap system that prevents draining water from backing tip an(] reentering the dishwasher. The system consists of an air-gap baffle, which usually extends from the countertop above the dishwasher, a hose that extends from the output end of the dishwasher pump to the inlet side of the baffle, and another hose that extends from the output end of the baffle to the drain pipe. When the dishwasher is not in use, the air-gap baffle separates the hoses from one another, thereby preventing any backflow from the drainpipe into the baffle, an(] from the baffle back through the hose into the dishwasher. As the dishwasher operates and drains, the force of the water causes the baffle to open so that drainage can proceed from the pump into the drainpipe. A stream of water that runs from tinder the dishwasher after each drain cycle points to the possibility of a leak in this air-gap system. Use the following steps to check it out:
1. Place a pail under the kitchen sink drain trap, which also serves as a trap for the dishwasher. Unscrew the trap and clean it out. Debris in the trap may be impeding the flow of water into the drain system, causing water to back tip into the air-gap baffle. This backflow may be the reason for the leak. Reinstall the trap and place a load of dishes. If the leak is still present, continue with the repair.
2. Turn off the circuit breaker or remove the se that serves the dishwasher. Try to turn on the dishwasher. Do not proceed until you are sure the electricity has been disconnected.
3. Remove the access toe plate from the bottom front of the dishwasher so you can reach the pump.
4. Trace the hose from the kitchen sink drainpipe to the air-gap baffle: then trace the hose from the air-gap baffle to the dishwasher pump. if you can't gain access to one or more parts of the system, you will have to pull the dishwasher out from under the counter.
5. Make sure the hoses are connected tightly at each end. Also see that they are in sound condition. (If the hoses are cracked, replace them)
6. Disconnect the hoses to make certain there is nothing inside one that is obstructing the flow of water.
7. Connect the hoses. Make certain that the connections are tight and that the hoses are not kinked.
