Anatomy of Oven
With the contacts of the thermostat closed, electrical current flows through the oven bake or broil circuit. As the temperature inside the oven increases, the fluid in the thermostat sensing bulb expands. The expanding fluid causes the bellows inside the thermostat to expand. When the temperature in the oven reaches approximately 20'F above the temperature set oil the thermostat dial, 61C expanding bellows opens the thermostat contacts and causes the current flow to the elements to stop. When the temperature inside the oven drops approximately 20'F below the dial setting, the fluid in the sensing bulb has contracted enough to remove sufficient pressure from the contacts to allow them to close anti start the current flow in the oven bake or broil circuit.
Thermostat testing Use the following procedure for testing the temperature of the thermostat.
Temperature testing The following procedure is recommended for obtaining the oven thermostat average temperature for calibration purposes:
1. Use a thermocouple-type temperature tester.
2. Place the thermometer sensor as close as possible to the center of the oven cavity using all empty oven rack to support the thermometer sensor.
3. Set the thermostat to 350°F.
4. Set the oven selector control to Bake.
5. After the initial off cycle, allow a minimum of three cut-in and three cut-out cycles to permit all oven cavity surfaces to stabilize.
Note: differential between the cut-in and the cutout temperature is not excessive in an empty oven. The mass of the heating element., will cause a slight lowering of the oven temperature after the thermostat cuts in and a slight rise after it cuts out. This adds up to approximately 10'F to the differential and is unavoidable.
6. If the average oven temperature is above 50`F from the selected setting, the thermostat should be replaced.
7. If the average oven temperature is more than 25°F, but less than 50'F, from the selected setting, the thermostat should be calibrated. See the specific thermostat instructions for proper calibration.
Self-dean thermostat The self-clean thermostat controls baking temperatures from 200 to 500'F, the broil temperature, and the clean temperature.
Contact operation while following the explanation. During the baking operation, contact,, 1 and 6 cycle the bake element and contacts 2 and 12 cycle the broil element. The broil element is supplied with half voltage, thus reducing the radiated power output to one-fourth of its normal value. The door lock contacts 3 and 4 are closed during the baking operation.
