Anatomy of Refrigerator

The refrigeration cycle
As a refrigerant is alternately vaporized to absorb heat and liquefied to give it up, it follows the path shown at left. In liquid form, it is pushed by the compressor through the capillary tube and evaporates, soaking up heat. The warmed gas is sucked back into the compressor and pumped through the condenser, losing heat as it changes back to a liquid. The drier-filter removes any moisture and impurities that get into the system during manufacture. This system is sealed, so problems here require the attention of a serviceman.

Distributing chilled air
In a self-defrosting refrigerator, a fan draws air over the evaporator, where it is chilled, and then blows it through ducts to cool food stored in the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Moisture condenses into frost on the cold evaporator coils: it is evaporated or melted and drained away when the coils are warmed during the defrosting cycle. An adjustable baffle partially blocks the air flow into the refrigerator so it does not get as cold as the freezer.
Two temperature controls All refrigerators come with one thermostat (right) that keeps storage compartments cold by turning the compressor motor on and off to chill coils alongside a wall of the freezer. In some refrigerator models, a second control adjusts the temperature in the refrigerator compartment by opening or closing a duct bringing in cold air.

Checking the refrigerator control
If the refrigerator is too warm and the freezer is normally cold, and adjusting dials does not help, make sure air ducts are unobstructed. Then check the refrigerator control: set it at midrange, take off the knobs and snap off the front panel. Measure the opening of the air-duct door (right). Turn the freezer thermostat off and open the refrigerator. If the air-duct door does not open wider as the refrigerator warms up, the control needs replacement.

Instalation
All refrigerators and freezers are thoroughly tested, checked, and assembled at the factory. Do not place the refrigerator or freezer in a confined area where there is little or no ventilation or in excessively damp places. Be sure the voltage is constant within ten per cent of the prescribed voltage. Extension cords and outlet boxes should be heavy enough to maintain proper voltage during the starting period and should be protected by a 20-amp. to 30-amp. fuse. Be sure that the unit is level, with all four corners resting on the floor. To be certain that the door gasket is making a good sea], check it by placing a piece of thin paper on the flange of each corner, then closing the door. A definite pressure should be noted when the paper is pulled out.
