Anatomy of Washer

IF YOU ARE GOING to get involved in doing more than cursory repair, you should know how to read a schematic wiring diagram. This diagram should be glued somewhere on the machine's chassis. It possesses a number of symbols that may be foreign to you, but which you have to understand if the diagram is to be used for what it's meant: as a "road map" to repair.
The troubleshooting charts provided in this chapter will allow you to determine what can cause the various washing-machine failures and what actions must be taken to overcome them. The only repair we wish to emphasize right now is testing the timer. You do it in the following manner:
1. Turn the timer dial slowly from the "off" position to the place in the cycle where the machine is not working normally. Count the number of increments (clicks) it takes to arrive at this point.
2. Count the corresponding number of increments on the timer cam chart which is usually included as part of the wiring diagram. The chart will then tell you the terminals of which switch should have been activated at the particular spot on the dial.
3. Remove the panel which reveals the timer. Connect a 115-volt test light to the terminals determined by counting clicks and turn on the machine. If one fails and begins leaking only the hose size and type specified by the machine's manufacturer should be used as a replacement. Failure to do it will lead to complications.
For example, the hoses used for supplying hot and cold water to the water-inlet valve from faucets must withstand relatively high pressures. Dishwasher manufacturer recommends that the hot-water hoses be able to with-stand 600 pounds of pressure, and that the ,old-water hose be able to withstand  pressure of 80 pounds per square inch at 60" F.
If the hoses connecting the faucet to the water-inlet valve, the parts will give the most trouble are the small stainless-steel filter screens which are inserted inside the hoses' ferrules at the faucet end. In hard-water areas in particular, these filter screens can clog with calcium and restrict the flow of water into the machine.
